Cedar Post Installation Guide
One of the most common questions we receive is, “What’s the best way to install a cedar post to ensure proper support for an arbor kit, mailbox post or lantern post?”
We recommend digging a hole at least 24” deep, with an option to go up to 30” deep, and making it twice as wide as the post itself. Add gravel or crushed stone to the bottom of the hole, place the post securely, and backfill the remaining space around the post with more gravel. This setup allows for efficient water drainage and helps prevent moisture-related issues.
New England Woodworks products are crafted to professional-grade standards and made from Western Red Cedar, a highly stable and rot-resistant wood. While Western Red Cedar is naturally durable, we recommend additional protection for in-ground applications. Applying a New England Woodworks rubber protective post wrap at ground level provides an extra safeguard against moisture and pests.
